EPS Introduces Virtual Reality into Pain Programs
Heidi Clarke
EPS is excited to step into the future of pain management education with the introduction of Virtual Reality (VR). In collaboration with Reality Health and guided by Professor Lorimer Moseley, we now offer clients an immersive program that brings complex pain science to life. These VR modules transform abstract concepts, like pain system hypersensitivity, into safe, vivid, lived experiences that make pain neuroscience easier to grasp.
For those who may find conventional education challenging, VR provides a practical, engaging way to build understanding and confidence, helping to break down barriers created by low health literacy.
Reducing Reliance on Medication & Enhancing Quality of Care
By turning education into an engaging, lived experience, VR helps clients move beyond information overload and towards real understanding. This deeper grasp of pain science empowers people to build confidence, adopt healthier strategies for recovery, and rely less on medication alone. At EPS, integrating VR is about enhancin, not replacing, the human care and support that sit at the heart of our 13-week program.
Why VR Matters for Chronic Pain Programs
Traditional education can be hard to absorb, especially when pain makes it difficult to focus. VR offers an engaging, sensory-rich way to learn, making concepts like pain system hypersensitivity easier to grasp. For clients who may struggle with conventional instruction, it provides a clear, memorable experience that builds confidence in self-management.
VR offers meaningful improvements across several key areas of chronic pain management:
Key Area | VR Advantage |
Education | Immersive, standardised modules simplify complex pain neuroscience concepts for patients and clinicians. |
Health Literacy | Sensory engagement improves comprehension among those with traditionally low health literacy. |
Pain Reduction | Empirical evidence supports decreases in pain intensity and improved functional outcomes. |
Self-Management | Potential for home-based, structured behavioural programs |
Multidisciplinary Fit | Integrates seamlessly with biopsychosocial, movement-based, and educational interventions. |
Scalable Delivery | Enables broader reach, reduced wait times, and enhanced clinician efficiency. |
Looking Ahead
By incorporating VR, EPS continues to combine innovation with evidence-based care. This technology doesn’t replace the human support in our programs, it enhances it. Clients gain access to a modern tool that supports movement, education, and recovery, ensuring EPS remains at the forefront of pain management solutions.
