Gratitude in Action

John Littleton

Imagine

Imagine a person walking along a road with a yoke over their shoulders with two buckets. One bucket is to store the negative and the other the positive experiences, thoughts, and feelings.

The Essence of Gratitude

At its core, gratitude is an intentional recognition of the positive aspects in our lives. It might be as profound as the unwavering support of loved ones, or as simple as the warmth of sunlight streaming through a window. This recognition, however, is only the first step. The true magic of gratitude is revealed when it’s translated into action—when our appreciation inspires us to give, serve, and uplift others.

Many people have heard the term ‘Schadenfreude’ (the pleasure we get from other’s misfortune), which is a very common trait of human nature. A newer term, ‘Freudenfreude’ (the joy we get from other people’s success or happiness), is also an important part of gratitude.

The Science of Gratitude

Research in psychology has demonstrated that practicing gratitude leads to a myriad of benefits: improved mental health, increased life satisfaction, decreased depression and anxiety, and even enhanced physical well-being. Studies show that grateful people are more likely to engage in healthy behaviours, sleep better, and have stronger immune systems.

But gratitude is not just a private affair. When we express our appreciation outwardly—whether to a friend, colleague, or stranger—we amplify its effects. Gratitude in action generates positive feedback loops: kind words prompt more kindness, and a grateful society becomes a more compassionate one.

Manifestations of Gratitude
  1. Asking yourself “what went well today”.
  2. Acts of kindness towards self and others
  3. Expressing thanks verbally and in writing
  4. Supporting others in times of need
  5. Giving back to the community
  6. Mindful presence and active listening

So, getting back to the introduction, if your negative bucket gets filled easily and quickly by focusing only on the negative aspects of your life, then you will tend to tilt towards the negative and stray from the path of healthy living, leading to mental health issues. However, if you allow your positive bucket to fill (gratitude), then you are more likely to stay balanced on the pathway of mental health and wellbeing.
